“Want a natural problem solver on your team or as a volunteer? Hire or collaborate with a disabled person.
Disabled people develop exceptional problem-solving skills simply by navigating a world that isn’t always designed for us.
Every day, we find ways to adapt, whether it’s: finding an alternative way to participate when accessibility barriers exist; navigating environments that weren’t built with us in mind; trying to have a conversation with someone in a long line about disability courtesy/rights for a ♿️ bathroom; adapting quickly when plans change at the last minute; being hyper-aware that people are not paying attention when they are on their phones walking and head down; or managing situations where ableism puts us in uncomfortable positions.
Problem-solving is second nature to us. We shouldn’t have to be experts at it, but the reality is – we are. And in life and the workplace, that skill is invaluable.”
